Fronriere of Hampstead are limited by Notre-Dame-de-Grâce south and east, Côte-Saint-Luc for the west side and bordered by a railway to the north.

the city was founded in 1914 by James Ballie by dissociation of the Côte-Saint-Luc municipality in order to make a garden city. The town avoided annexation to Montreal three times in 1916, 1924 and most recently in 2006 with the "demerger". The city experienced a major expansion around 1920. In 1945 the city's population surpassed the 2,200 residents. The current population is around 7,000 people.
