Because Montreal is an island, multiple bridges are surrounding the city. This explains numbers of bridges around the city. However it is the presence of railways companies that explains both the presence of viaducts and tunnels on the island. Montreal was the central point, the hub, in the past century of railway transportation in Canada. This is why an impressive number of railways cross so many areas of the metropolis.
