Montreal Stock Exchange Tower

Informations and facts

Among the ten tallest buildings in Montreal, the Montreal Stock Exchange tower is located at the edge of Victoria Square, connected to Montreal's underground and the Victoria Square subway station.

This building is the third occupied by this institution, the firsts where located in Old Montreal. The project was originally much larger and was composed of three identical towers of which one should a be an hotel. We can see that the initial plan was not implemented. The second tower was exclude from the project and the hotel is much smaller (The Delta Hotel).

Short History of the Montreal Stock Exchange.

The institution was founded in 1874 after several years of unregulated transactions. It was not until 1883 that the institution first nonprofit, moved into a building on Saint-Sacrement Street. In 1904, the institution moved into its new offices build for its needs on St. Francois-Xavier Street.

In 1974, the Montreal Exchange and the Canadian Exchange (formerly the Montreal Curb Market Exchenge) merge.

In the trends of the Kyoto Protocol and the growing concerns on environment, the institution created in 2006 a joint venture: the Montréal Climate Exchange MCeX).

In 2008 it merged with the Toronto Stock Exchange
