Il fit ses études secondaires au Hight Scool of Montreal. Très vite, il occupe un poste de dessinateur (draftsman) à la Sherpley, Rutan & Coolige à Boston dès 1888. Il est de retour à Montréal en 1891 où il supervisera la construction du Montréal Board of Trade. Dès 1892, il commence ses propres projets de maisons.
C'est en 1898 que William se joint à Edward en tant que dessinateur.
Il participera aux dessins de l'édifice London & Landcaster.
Edward et W.S. Maxwell firent les plans de nombreuses maisons du Mile carré doré.
